We are pleased to share that YMCA of Singapore was awarded the Charity Transparency Award 2017 (CTA) for the large charities category.

Intergenerational bonding at YMCA Silver Fiesta 2017

Organised over two days from 9 to 10 November 2017 at Toa Payoh HDB Hub, the YMCA Silver Fiesta 2017 saw over 1,500 elderly folks from 34 Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and the public come together for two days of fun.

Giving the gift of dignity

This morning, we may have no trouble getting out of bed, dressing ourselves comfortably and tucking into a hearty breakfast before cruising off to the office. But a typical day does not begin in quite the same way for everyone in Singapore.

From generation to generation

She was only six years old when her brother participated in the YMCA Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA) three years ago. But watching him practice so many times enabled her to deliver the same speech just as well but with her personal anecdotes. Public speaking came as a natural progression for Yvonne Swee-Neo Inglin, who is the first runner-up for the Lower Primary Category at YMCA PESA 2017.

YMCA thanks President Tony Tan for his service to the nation

YMCA of Singapore would like to express our deepest gratitude to President Tony Tan for his many years of distinguished service to the nation in the Cabinet and the Presidency. We are also thankful for his keen interest and support of YMCA programmes since 2011 as the President of the Republic of Singapore and Patron-in-Chief of the YMCA of Singapore.

Taking a trip down memory lane

On Saturday 22 July, volunteers from 10 corporations, organisations and schools met with over 160 beneficiaries from 10 Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) to enjoy a concert and carnival at the Asian Civilisations Museum. Organised by YMCA of Singapore, YMCA Proms @ the Park 2017 attracted about 600 people to the event, including members of public. Deputy Prime Minister & Coordinating Minister for National Security, Mr Teo Chee Hean, was the guest of honour at the event.

YMCA of Singapore extends its heartiest congratulations to Joyce Yu, Manager, International Programmes on being presented with the “Dedicated staff leader” award from the hands of Guest-of-Honour Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education & Skills) & Second Minister for Defence at the launch of “Many Lenses, One YEP” Exhibition.

Little entrepreneurs with big hearts

To ignite their entrepreneurial spirit, 82 students from 8 YMCA Student Care Centres (SCC) sold their handmade crafts to the public at the Sengkang South Little Entrepreneurs & Family Carnival 2017 on Saturday, 3 June 2017. Mr Gan Thiam Poh, Member of Parliament graced the event as Guest-of-Honour.

11th YMCA Mandarin Speaking Awards 2017 Prize Presentation

The 11^th YMCA Mandarin Speaking Awards (MSA) 2017 Prize Presentation saw close to 200 guests gather at Woodlands Regional Library Auditorium on Friday 26 May 2017. Guest-of-Honour, Mr Baey Yam Keng, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth delivered a speech and presented the prizes to the top three winners.

The YMCA Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday, 25 May 2017 at YMCA of Singapore.

Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes celebrates 15 years of promoting social entrepreneurial spirit in youths

Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes 2017 (YFC) was launched on Tuesday 16 May 2017 with Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, President of the Republic of Singapore gracing the event as the Guest of Honour. To symbolise a flying start by the participants, over 600 attendees released spin-tops into the air at the launch ceremony.

Taking their love of golf to the next level

The 18th YMCA Charity Golf 2017 saw more than 140 avid golfers teeing off at Singapore Island Country Club on 5 May 2017 in support of volunteerism. The event drew strong support from corporates and individuals who contributed generously to the fundraising effort, helping to raise $302,000 for the YMCA-Lim Kim San Volunteers Programme.

YMCA Flag Day 2017

Unfazed by the sweltering heat, more than 640 YMCA staff, students and volunteers went on an island-wide street collection for the YMCA Flag Day 2017 on 18 March. Over $15,438 of dollar notes were collected, and 25 bags of coins were sent to the Singapore Mint for counting.

Inspiring others through his service

A faculty in the NUS Business School, Associate Professor Albert Teo has been serving as the Programme Director of the YMCA-NUS Business School Volunteer Service Management Programme (VSMP) since its introduction in 2007.

Celebrating the life of the late Dr Robert Loh

A thanksgiving and memorial service was held at YMCA of Singapore on 28 February 2017 to honour Dr Robert Loh Choo Kiat, who was the longest-serving President of YMCA of Singapore from 1970 to 1992.

The YMCA fraternity came together to give thanks and celebrate the life of Dr Robert Loh, who passed away peacefully at home on 31 January at the age of 91. Over 250 guests including representatives from Boys' Brigade, Malay Youth Literary Association, National Council of Social Service and Rotary Club of Singapore were in attendance.

Aunty Mary, Stephen, Andrew, Pat, their families and loved ones:

I am sure I speak for all gathered here, to honor the memory of the late Dr Robert Loh as a stalwart supporter of the YMCA of Singapore and the social service sector, and a community champion who has lived a life devoted to service.

The late Dr Robert Loh was a philanthropist and a shining example of a faithful steward in the Lord’s service in his lifetime. Though he lent his support to various charitable causes, the YMCA of Singapore had a special place in his heart. As a young boy, Dr Loh had joined the YMCA as a Junior member in 1937. Passing by every day walking to and from school, the YMCA soon became a second home to him as he participated in many wholesome recreational activities with his schoolmates.

Remembering Dr Robert Loh, President Emeritus, YMCA of Singapore

The late Dr Robert Loh Choo Kiat was the longest serving President of YMCA of Singapore for 22 years from 1970 to 1992.

Dr Loh began his association with YMCA in 1937 as a Junior member when he was a young student at St Andrew’s. The YMCA building on 1 Orchard Road was a familiar sight to Dr Loh as he passed it every day, walking to and from school. It became like a second home to him. As a member, he joined its physical development classes and made full use of its facilities to indulge in healthy and wholesome recreational activities with his school mates.

UNIYte-d As One

A total of 90 guests comprising Uni-Y NUS, NTU, SMU members, executive committee members, parents, school staff and YMCA staff came together for UNIYte 2017, Uni-Y’s Annual General Meeting on 21 January 2017 at YMCA of Singapore. The Annual General Meeting is a time for members to come together to be aligned with the club’s direction for the new year as they move ahead, united in purpose and mission. Mr Eric Teng, President, Mr Bryan Tan, Honorary Secretary and Mr Lo Chee Wen, General Secretary, YMCA of Singapore graced the occasion. They were joined by Mr Yoshihiro Sueoka, CEO and Mr Hiroyuki Satoh, Executive Director, Osaka YMCA who were in Singapore to join the UNIYte AGM as they wanted to find out more about Uni-Y.

Giving her time to build others up

Five years ago, 31 year old Chia Ee Han pushed the boundaries of her comfort zone and embarked on her first overseas volunteering trip with YMCA International Service Programmes to Cambodia. Since then, she has led three young working adults' and a junior college team to reach out to the overseas community. During the 8 day trip in Cambodia, she spent five days in Unaccompanied Association (UNACAS), a Children's Centre in Lech Wat, Phnom Penh where she taught English to the children and also helped with infrastructural work. The rustic living conditions taught Ee Han to appreciate life better, and inspired her to return as a volunteer leader, leading groups of working adults and students overseas to countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar with an aim to help improve education and infrastructures.
